Spring 2014 | Evelyn Tickle
Studio 2 was a semester long project broken down into several phases. Overall, the concept of this project was to design a shelter that was made of completely recycled materials and could be built and carried easily by a homeless person. The first phase was a shelter made completely out of cardboard. The next step was to make this shelter portable somehow. For this step, I created a backpack in which the shelter can be folded up and placed into. The backpack was made from a large sheet of plastic (a shower curtain) and duct tape. After this portable version, we scaled up and created a structure that could be pulled behind a bike. My structure was made from small pieces of recycled metal that could be easily obtained at a scrap yard. Finally, we created apartments based on a 12 x 12 x 12 cube that would act as temporary housing for homeless teens. This studio focused on learning the skill of soldering and metal working.
